Veronica Norton Obituary

Veronica Elinor Norton of North Berwick, ME passed away peacefully on January 3, 2025 at the age of 75. She was known as a clever, funny, courageous, determined, and immensely creative person who enjoyed: spending time with friends and family, gardening, caring for animals, reading and helping others however she could.

Veronica, or Ronnie as many knew her, was born on May 3, 1949 to George and Elinor Lyons at Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital in Brighton, MA. She grew up in Marshfield, MA with her older brother George and two younger sisters Patricia (Tee) and Marie. The Lyons family also resided in Malta for a portion of Ronnie’s childhood when the family moved for her father’s naval assignment. Ronnie took horseback riding lessons, excelled at school and spent lots of time enjoying the country with family.

Growing up in Marshfield, Ronnie enjoyed summers at the beach in Humarock and swimming off of her family’s dock in the North River. She loved clothes, shopping, music and dancing. Ronnie was always known for being fun, cool and fashionable through her teens and beyond. She had a rich, creative side as well – painting her bedroom furniture orange on a whim when she was young and piecing together stylish outfits. Upon graduating from Sacred Heart High School in Kingston, MA in 1967 she briefly attended a couple of different colleges before happily landing herself at Nasson College in Springvale, ME where she earned a BA in English in 1972. Through her studies at Nasson, she was able to attend school in Vienna, Austria for a semester abroad. During this time, she took advantage of the opportunity to travel extensively throughout Europe.

Ronnie married Shane Norton in 1980 and shortly afterwards they bought their first home in Charlestown, MA. Together they gutted and rebuilt a three-story townhouse, which was  just a couple of blocks away from the Bunker Hill Monument. Here they began their journey to start a family. During this time Ronnie primarily worked as a receptionist at Harvard Community Health in Kenmore Square in Boston. In the spring of 1986 they adopted 7-month-old Emily from Bogota, Colombia and Ronnie gave birth to Alex in Boston, MA in the spring of 1987. They remained in Charlestown for a few years before relocating to North Berwick, ME.

Moving to Maine granted them more space and they took on caring for many beloved pets through the years: Golden Retrievers, several Corgis, Maine Coon cat mixes, ducks, geese and entirely too many mice, gerbils, hamsters, fish and birds. Ronnie loved saving and caring for animals, something she instilled in both of her children. Their new home brought lots of creative opportunities to Ronnie, including designing tablescapes and decorating for gatherings at her home and drawing and painting on decor items. The property itself allowed for her to start and maintain gardens which she loved working in and making arrangements out of the beautiful flowers which she grew.

Ronnie had learned to drive shortly after moving to North Berwick and was an attentive and loving stay-at-home mom until Emily and Alex were in school full time. She then became a van driver for the local school district and fell deeper into the field of education, switching jobs to become an Ed. Tech, which motivated her to pursue earning her M.Ed. in SpEd. through the University of Southern Maine. Ronnie became a teacher, supporting middle-school-aged Functional Life Skills students. She was fantastic in her role as a kind and patient educator who fostered the spark she saw in all of her kiddos. Ronnie worked hard to integrate her students into the local community, organizing pet food and blanket drives, making shared meals and engaging students in creative projects. She really loved and believed in all the kids with whom she worked.

Her love of learning and facilitating growth in others certainly applied to her own children as well. Emily and Alex were always encouraged to try new sports, after school activities and to explore the world around them. Ronnie believed in fostering her kids’ interests and allowing them to find their own paths. She was always bringing them to the local library, driving them to and from extra curricular activities and exploring places like the New England Aquarium and Boston Museum of Science during vacations with family in Massachusetts. When her grandchildren arrived on the scene, she was just as doting and mindful about spending time with them and always making them feel special and loved.

In 2006, Ronnie received a pancreas transplant in an early, experimental effort to assist with her type 1 diabetes management. It was one of the first pancreas transplants in the country and one of the longest successful ones. After the transplant, Ronnie no longer had diabetes or had to continue insulin management. Healthy, viable organs can save and extend the lives of others, as it did with Ronnie. Her family strongly advocates for organ donation and hopes that if you aren't already a donor, that you become one!

Ronnie is fondly remembered and loved by her husband, Shane Norton; her children, Emily Diaz Norton (partner Nick Zalisk) and son Alex Norton (wife Jennifer Norton); two grandchildren Eleanor and Jeff Norton; siblings, brother George Lyons (wife Ann Lyons), sister Patricia Kastli, sister Marie Lopresti (husband John Lopresti), the extended Lyons and Norton families and the many dear friends she made through the years.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 am Friday, May 16, 2025 at Saint Christine Catholic Church in Marshfield, MA followed by a reception from 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm at E/2 restaurant in Marshfield, MA. Ronnie’s family welcomes contributions made in her honor to either the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) or to the Special Olympics of Maine, both of which represent causes she loved and cared for.
