Steven H. McCann

Steven H. McCann left us on March 24, 2022, while holding his wife’s hand, in his beloved Wells Beach house. Steve was born to Sumner and Marie McCann on February 2, 1945, in Portland, Maine. He attended Sanford High School, where he enjoyed playing all 3 sports. During his football halftimes, he would skip the locker room and be found, still on the field, playing the trombone. Always looking out for others, he was the consummate older brother and friend.  Steve met the love of his life shortly after graduating and married Helen Rutter on May 27, 1967.

Steve was a contributing member of the Sanford community where he owned two businesses; J & S Ambulance and Ballenger Auto; served as president of Jaycees, Kiwanis, and MADA; and was a proud member of the Sanford Town Club. Steve enjoyed sharing that he was a trustee, or as he would say, “King Sh*t” of the sewer district.  

Pop, as he was affectionately known to many, enjoyed his time being around children. He loved listening to Casey sing, watching Alaina play basketball, Brennan on the football field, Mikey on the soccer field, and Adrianne on stage. He loved board games and playing cards with friends and family. He enjoyed summer days with his nieces, nephews, and daycare kiddos at the beach. He loved shopping and refereeing from the sidelines. Steve was an avid Boston sports fan and loved attending Spring Training in Florida. 

In retirement, he enjoyed working for Lafayette Hotels where he visited with people and shared his local recommendations with visitors. He loved his hallmark movies and attending happy hours. 

It brought him great joy to help people. He was able to have a conversation with anyone he met, making friends wherever he went. He could whistle any tune and loved to dance. His smile and his gorgeous blue eyes lit up the room. Steve was truly one of a kind.

Steve was predeceased by his parents and brother Eric B. McCann.

He is survived by his wife of almost 55 years; his daughter Stacey and husband Mark Kirby; their children Casey, Hannah, Brennan, Parker, and Alaina; his son Jason and partner Janet Mayo; her children Adrianne and Mikey; and his brother Gerald McCann.

A visitation to celebrate Steve’s life will be held on April 10, 2022, above Forbes Seafood in Wells between the hours of 2:00-4:00. In his honor, live in the moment, love large, and be kind.
