Robert J. McCaffery, born October 16, 1944 in Staten Island, New York, passed away peacefully at home with family by his side in Berwick, Maine on January 18th. He was cherished by the many who knew him as Dad, Bob, Grampa Bob, and Uncle Bob.
Bob proudly served in the U.S. Army Intelligence Corps, completing two tours in Vietnam, and was honorably discharged. Following his service, he returned home and completed his accounting degree at the University of Maryland. Bob spent 27 years as an FBI Special Agent in the Columbia SC, Washington DC, and Boston MA offices until his retirement in January of 1996.
Later, he turned his attention to real estate and renovating his beloved multi-family homes. In December of 2006, Bob married Naida, his long-time companion of 20 years, and moved to Berwick, Maine where he enjoyed his retirement and all of the activities that Maine had to offer.
Although Bob never sought the spotlight, his many years of love, dedication, and quiet devotion to his blended family deserve to be celebrated. He led by example as a true gentleman - steady, gracious, and endlessly generous, often showing his care through actions rather than words. Bob was especially proud of his children and grandchildren, and that pride was on full display in the well-worn collection of baseball hats he owned - one for every school and club they belonged to - each carefully chosen and strategically worn.
In retirement, Bob could most often be found in his favorite recliner, lingering near the coffee pot, or sneaking a cookie when no one was looking. There was never a home project he wouldn’t tackle, nor a tool he didn’t have on hand, and never a coffee can he couldn’t fill with screws, nails, or bits and pieces saved “just in case.” These small, familiar moments are where Bob’s love lived — in his quiet presence, his readiness to help, and the homes he so lovingly maintained.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Mary McCaffery of Maryland and his former wife Mary Jo of Massachusetts. He is survived by his loving wife Naida, his son Tim and his partner Katie Jo Clagg of Massachusetts, his son Patrick and his wife Alison of New Jersey, his daughter Robin Sullivan and her husband Erin of New Hampshire, his step-daughter Shelley Jones and her husband Hoyt of Kentucky, his Grandson Joseph Long and his partner Sydney Harrison of Maine, and his sister Patricia McCaffery of Maryland. Bob is also survived by his nine grandchildren (Joseph, Jeremy, Paige, Sam, Ian, Delia, Colleen, Kyle & Ruby) and two great-grandchildren.
He will be missed by all that knew him and who were lucky to have known him.
Visiting hours will be held Saturday January 24, 2026, 11am-12:30pm with a Memorial Service at 12:30, at Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick, Maine.
