Raymond (Ray) James Obituary

Raymond W. James, 78 of Portland Street, passed away at his home February 5, 2023 after a year-long battle with cancer.

He was born September 22, 1944 in Westbrook, the son of Raymond Charles and Arlene (Manchester) James.  Ray graduated high school in 1962 at 17 years old and needed his father’s permission to enlist in the U.S. Navy. He served on the USS Ticonderoga.

In 1969, Ray married Donna Hemingway, settling in North Berwick in 1977.  Over the years, Ray worked for several local companies, including S.D. Warren, the school department, the North Berwick Police Department and retired from Hussey Seating where he worked for 33 years.  In his retirement, he built and sold his own lawn furniture.    Ray loved bass fishing whenever he could, but not before manicuring his property, which he took great pride in.

Ray and Donna once took a 7-week cross-country trip. They also took a yearly road trip to Wisconsin to visit relatives; hitting every Casino along the way.  They rode motorcycles together and had a wonderful 50 year marriage before her passing in 2020.

Ray is survived by his daughter, Deanna Foley of North Berwick; son Michael James of Somersworth, NH, grandson Kevin Foley of Shapleigh, granddaughter Jenna Kearns and husband Christopher of North Berwick, great-granddaughter, Clara Kearns; brother Paul James and wife Cindy of Westbrook, sister Donna Kenney of Sanford, brother-in-law Buddy Hemingway and wife Colleen of Freeport, brother-in-law, Bobbie Berry of South Portland.

A time of visitation will be held Friday, February 17 from 4pm to 6pm at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick, ME.  Friends who wish may contribute to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123.
