Paul Hussey, Jr.

Paul Hussey Jr., 77, of South Berwick, Maine, completed his last day on the job on August 27,2025, surrounded by the deep love and gratitude of his family.  A lifelong resident of South Berwick, Paul lived a life rooted in hard work, service, and unwavering devotion to those around him.

He is survived by his beloved wife and soulmate, Mary Hussey, and their children: Paul Hussey III, Kimberly & Jason Kast , Brian & Tanya Hussey, James & Victoria Lee, Jeremy Hussey & fiance Heather Berube, Eric & Ashley Hussey, Becky Batchelder & Matt Aceto, and Emily Batchelder & Joe Marino. Paul’s legacy continues through his 35 grandchildren and 17great-grandchildren, all of whom were blessed to call him Grandpa. His sisters Jeanne & Bob Smith, Susan & Jim Howard, and brother Peter & Linda Hussey, as well as his cherished Aunt Nancy and her husband Skip Blanchard, provided enduring support and companionship throughout his life—especially in recent months. He was cherished by his nieces, nephews, cousins and aunts and uncles.

Paul was a man of family, and his circle was wide. He held deep affection for his extended family, the Kenney family, who brought even more brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews into his heart. His mother-in-law Zelda Kenney was so special to him. Paul’s golden retrievers, Hazel and Frankie, were his constant companions and will miss him dearly. The proud son of the late Paul Hussey Sr. and Elsie Hussey, Paul was a man who worked tirelessly and lived generously. As the second generation owner of Hussey Septic and founder of Hussey Construction, P. Hussey Inc., in the late 1980s, Paul built not only businesses but trust—his word was his bond. His work ethic was unmatched, his integrity unshakable. He cherished his work family and molded the young men he trained on the job, teaching them, sharing his road songs and inspiring them to be the best version of themselves, becoming a father figure to many. The baton has been passed to the third generation of Hussey Septic to  Jeremy and second generation of Hussey Excavation to Brian. Paul took great pride in watching both sons grow their businesses!

Beyond his profession, Paul gave himself fully to his community. He served for decades as a coach, umpire, and longtime President of South Berwick Little League and Babe Ruth baseball. His involvement shaped the lives of countless young athletes. He found joy in coaching teams like RFD and was instrumental in building and maintaining the Agamenticus fields, including the one named in his honor. Paul’s passion for baseball was eclipsed only by his love for the kids who played the game.“GranPaul,” as he was affectionately called by generations of daycare children, was the baby-whisperer, the ball-tosser, the swing pusher, the hug giver, and the steady, singing presence who lit up every room—and every backyard. He was admired not only for his strength and signature smile but also for his kindness and the genuine way he made people feel seen and valued. A natural storyteller and jokester, Paul gifted us with unforgettable sayings, like “will the rain hurt the rhubarb,” and songs that still echo  in our heads—though we may never know how much that doggie is in the window, or find our way driving without his guidance. Paul also served his town with dedication—on the Town Council, Planning Board, Sewer Board, Cemetery Board, and as one of the founding members of HADDA. Whether it was through civic service, coaching, or simply lending a helping hand, he gave quietly and whole-heartedly.

He found great joy riding motorcycles with Mary and their close friends, sharing the road and the journey and creating memories that will last a lifetime. What made Paul light up the most was welcoming each new littlest member into the family, singing grampy’s little boy, or grampy’s little girl, finding the right nickname, sharing his love with each of them. Even through illness, Paul remained grateful. The visits, the support, the love of friends and family in his final months brought him comfort and strength. He leaves behind a legacy of integrity, laughter, compassion, and love.

Paul Hussey Jr. will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His absence leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his memory will be carried in every story, every field, every ride, and every heart he touched.

A private graveside service will be held on Monday, September 8, 2025, followed by a Celebration of Life at Spring Hill in South Berwick at 3 p.m. All are welcome to attend and share in remembering a truly remarkable man at Spring Hill.

In lieu of flowers the family is suggesting donations to either South Berwick Rollinsford Little League Softball and Marshwood Youth Baseball, to establish funds for a memorial plaque for the Hussey field and a memorial bench on the softball field.
