Martha (Miffy) Abbott, 94 of North Berwick passed away peacefully July 8, 2023 at Durgin Pines in Kittery, which had been her home for the past several years.
She was born August 5, 1927 in South Berwick, one of 10 children born to Charles and Martha (Goodwin) Hussey. Miffy graduated from Berwick Academy in South Berwick. In 1950, she married Bruce Abbott. They built a home on Oakwoods Road in North Berwick where they raised their three sons. For close to 30 years, she was everyone’s favorite “lunch lady” throughout SAD #60. After retirement, she opened the “Country Café” on Main Street in North Berwick where people enjoyed her amazing cooking, especially her breads. Her life revolved around the kitchen and cooking. Nana loved making gingerbread houses with her grandchildren and eventually taught classes at the Noble Adult Ed program. She loved her annual trip to the Food Services Convention.
Miffy was well loved at Durgin Pines where she was fondly referred to as the “Mayor”. She enjoyed taking part in the activities such as Bingo and making crafts with the preschoolers and her trips to the salon to get her hair and nails done, as well as going out to lunch. The family deeply appreciates the care she received and extended family she gained in her time there.
She was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Bruce Abbott, son, Robert Abbot, granddaughter, Denise Abbott as well as siblings, Paul, Charles, Gerald, John, Edgar, Madeline, Rachel and Kathy. Surviving are two sons, Barry and Cathy Abbott and Bernard and Mindy Abbott all of North Berwick; sister Phyllis Clark; 10 grandchildren, Bobby, Amy, Meagan, Crystal, Jody, Jacob, Joshua and Katherine; many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Services will be private.
