Sanford – Lois S. Chesley, age 99, passed away at her home in Sanford on August 3, 2023.
Lois was born on July 30, 1924 in Sanford to Herbert and Blanche (Cooper) Smith. She lived her entire life in Sanford.
She graduated from Sanford High School in 1943 and married Fred (John) Chesley Jr. on June 14, 1947. Her husband was also a native of Sanford.
During her lifetime Lois worked at the Goodall Mills as a bookkeeper, as a substitute teacher, and for her sister at Dot’s Take – Out in North Berwick. She later operated a childcare service in her home providing care to over 80 children with the assistance of her daughter Margo.
Lois enjoyed cooking, sewing, and reading.
She was predeceased by her husband “Johnny”, her parents, and all seven of her siblings. She is survived by her 2 daughters, Margo Chesley and Patti Chadbourne; her son-in-law Bill Chadbourne; her grandson James Chadbourne of Sanford; her granddaughter Katherine “Kate” Chadbourne of Dover, NH; 2 great – granddaughters, Hali Chadbourne and Aeva Chadbourne both of Sanford.
Funeral services will be held at the Johnson Funeral Home in North Berwick. An hour of visitation will be held from 9am to 10am followed by a funeral at 10 am at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick, ME. Burial at Oakdale Cemetery in Sanford will follow.
In lieu of Flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Southern Maine.
