Linda (Powers) Nickerson

WELLS – Linda Powers Nickerson, 91, of Wells, Maine, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2026, with her family by her side.

Linda was born on August 7, 1934, in Portland, Maine, the daughter of the late Leon Herbert and Alice Batchelder Powers. She graduated from Sanford High School in 1952 and earned a B.A. in Sociology from Colby College in 1956. That same year, she married Charles L. Nickerson, beginning a marriage that spanned sixty-eight years until his passing in 2024. When asked the secret to a successful marriage, Linda’s answer was always the same: friendship, respect, and communication.

Linda excelled academically and was deeply engaged in her school life, including student government and glee club, but her gift for writing and poetry stood apart. Throughout her life, she returned to those gifts, writing poems and thoughtful notes that marked life’s moments and lifted the spirits of others. She would often respond to thank-you cards with thank-you cards of her own, a small but perfect reflection of her deep appreciation for others.

Linda devoted herself to her family, creating a home where family and friends always felt welcome as Charlie built his legal career. Together, “Linda and Charlie” formed a true partnership, and their commitment to one another left a lasting impression on everyone who knew them.

Above all, Linda cherished her role as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She listened more than she spoke, and when she did speak, it was usually worth hearing. She had a keen wit and a rare ability to offer just the right words, whether advice, encouragement, or quiet reassurance.

Some of her happiest moments were the simplest: seated at the glass-top table at Moody Beach, a deck of Skip-Bo cards never far from reach, surrounded by grandchildren, laughter, and the easy rhythms of summer. These moments, filled with both quiet joy and occasional exuberance, reflected who she was at her core.

Linda and Charlie built a life rich with friendship and shared experience. While they enjoyed traveling, they were happiest at their home on Moody Beach or on overnight trips to Boothbay Harbor.

She was a longtime member of North Parish Congregational Church, where she and close friends quietly shared their time and compassion with others.

Her legacy lives on, not only in her family, but also in the countless lives she touched through thoughtful words, small acts of kindness, and the warm, graceful way she lived her life.

She is survived by her three sons: David Charles Nickerson and his partner Suzanne Roux of Kennebunk; Charles Leon Nickerson and his wife Diana of Andover, Massachusetts; and Daniel Lloyd Nickerson of Wells. She also leaves five grandchildren: Nathan, Michael, Kathryn, Charles Jr., and Andrew; and six great-grandchildren: Sofia, Angelina, Noah, Miles, Nour, and Charlotte. She is also survived by her sister, Hilda Versluys of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. She was predeceased by her brother, David Powers, formerly of Golden, Colorado.

At her request, no public services will be held. Arrangements are entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick. Online condolences may be expressed on their website.
