Linda Hussey, 70, of South Berwick, Maine, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2026, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, holding hands with her devoted husband, Peter, and her daughter, Melissa.
Linda fought a courageous and determined battle against cancer right until the very end. Her strength, attitude, and tenacity were nothing short of inspiring.
Born on August 6, 1955, to Regina and Leon Monroe Jr., Linda grew up in Berwick, Maine, and attended Noble High School. She moved to South Berwick in 1973 and married Peter Hussey, on August 11, 1973. Together they built a life filled with love, challenges, laughter, and unwavering devotion.
Linda was a dedicated and proud mother to Tanya and Melissa. She worked for many years as a cashier at Market Basket in Somersworth, where she formed lasting friendships with customers and coworkers alike. One of her greatest joys was razzing her regulars — many would purposely wait in her line just to experience her quick wit, playful banter, and unapologetically honest advice. She had a gift for making people smile and laugh, and she brightened the day of everyone fortunate enough to cross her path.
Linda had a big heart. She was honest, kind, fiercely loyal, and wonderfully unfiltered. You always knew where you stood with her — and that authenticity is one of the many reasons she was so deeply loved.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 53 years, Peter Hussey; her daughter Melissa Patterson and son-in-law Andrew Patterson; her sisters-in-law Susan (James) Howard, Jeanne (Robert) Smith, and Mary Hussey; along with many cherished nieces, nephews, friends, and loyal customers.
She was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Tanya Hussey, who passed away in 2001 — no doubt waiting with open arms — as well as her parents; her brothers, Robert Monroe Jr. and Gary Monroe; and her brother-in-law, Paul Hussey Jr.
Linda’s greatest joy was the time she spent with Melissa and her beloved grand-dogs. The bond between mother and daughter was extraordinary — a connection that now takes a different form but will continue to grow forever.
She also loved riding in Pete’s hot rod. As soon as the roads cleared each spring, they could be seen cruising around town nightly, heading to car shows or simply enjoying the ride together. Those drives brought them both immense happiness and are treasured memories for all who saw them pass by.
Linda will be missed beyond measure by her family, friends, and the many customers whose lives she touched.
A private graveside service will be held in the spring.
