Leon (Jon) Chamblee III Obituary

Leon A. Chamblee III, 78 of Wells, ME and former longtime resident of North Berwick, passed away into the loving arms of Jesus on July 8, 2022, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Son of the late Leon A. and Nathalie (Bond) Chamblee Jr.; Jon was raised in Jefferson, Maine where his love for sports, fishing, gardening, and the fire department developed.  He attended Lincoln Academy where he met his wife Susan (Clark) Chamblee.  Jon and Susan celebrated 57 years of marriage this past January.

He’s survived by his son, Jon “Rick” and Kimberly (Mains) Chamblee, and his three daughters, Lisa Chamblee (Ken George), Carole Chamblee Weiss (Jeremy Lamarre), Curt and Amanda (Chamblee) Westphal; 12 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren, a brother Michael Casey, two nieces, and a nephew.

He was led to southern Maine when he took a position with the Maine Forestry Service.  He was proud to be part of a group called to help fight wild fires in CA.  After his time with the Maine Forestry Service, he continued to volunteer in the Mt. Agamenticus Fire Tower as a watchman until it was brought down in 1997 in the hopes of being repaired.

The family settled in North Berwick where he worked for Hussey’s Seating and joined the North Berwick Fire Department, serving as chief for two years.

Once again, the fire department called, this time leading him to Pratt & Whitney in North Berwick where he was part of the startup of their facility fire department.  He continued to work for Pratt for more than 20 years until he retired in 2004.  He was extremely proud to have two of his grandsons also go on to work for Pratt & Whitney.

He lived life to the fullest with his love for God, family, patriotism, firefighting, HAM radios, gardening, fishing adventures, and sports.  He loved the Red Sox, Giants, Celtics, and Bruins.  His favorite teams though where the ones where his son or grandsons were playing or coaching.

He was a member of Southern Maine Fire Notification from 1995 – 2022, serving as President from 2002 - 2011.

In 2009 he fulfilled a dream when he built “Headquarters”; his own fire lookout.

Predeceased by his parents and sister Karen Chamblee.

A time of visitation will be held Wednesday, July 20 from 9:30 am to 11am immediately followed by a funeral at 11 am at the Bethel Christian Church, 129 Lower Main Street, North Berwick, ME. Burial Friday, July 22 in Jefferson, ME.
