Jean Trafton Obituary

Jean P. Trafton, 78, of Berwick, ME passed away peacefully December 8, 2020 at the Pinnacle Nursing Home in North Berwick, ME.

She was born March 29, 1942 in York, ME, daughter of Calvin and Hilma (Alexander) Davis.  Jean was a 1960 graduate of Union Springs Academy in upstate New York.   She excelled in her studies, allowing her to graduate after just 3 years.  She was the Vice-president of her class and the Editor of the yearbook.  To help pay for her studies, she worked in a broom shop making corn brooms. In addition, Jean maintained life-long friendships with Spaulding High School alumni.

Jean acquired her Nursing certificate in 1965 and was an LPN for 20 years. The next 20, a Medical Social Worker at Havenwood Heritage Heights CCRC and Frisbie Memorial Hospital. In 1983 she graduated with a BS S in Social Work from the University of Southern Maine with honors from Phi Kappa Phi.

Music brought great joy to Jean’s life, beginning in high school. She loved singing and was a member of the South Berwick Community Chorus, York County chorus, Rochester Chorus and Voices from the Heart in Portsmouth.  She had numerous solos including in the production of Handel’s Messiah. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in North Berwick, where she also sang in the choir.

She loved playing the piano at home and asked to play in church services.  She loved playing for family and friends at gatherings especially during the holidays.

Jean had many other interests including: a passion for family genealogy and a deep appreciation of dear friends across the country and world. Jean was proud of her North Berwick heritage and was a member of the North Berwick Historical Society.  She was instrumental in the opening of the homeless shelter My Friend’s Place in Dover.  Jean also participated in various marches and causes, including Women’s Rights, Anti-Nuclear Marches and local initiatives that supported the needs of feral cats.

Jean was predeceased by her husband, Gordon “Bruce” Trafton and brothers, Calvin Davis, Jr., Dewey and Fay Hutchins. Surviving are her 2 sons, Aaron Hersom and wife Stella of Atkinson, NH and Jeremy Hersom and wife Jennifer of Berwick, ME; sister-in-law Laura Hutchins of Marlboro, NH; sister-in-law Evelyn Hutchins of Dover Point, NH; 4 grandchildren, Jessica, Samantha, Olivia and Addison Hersom.

Services will be held Thursday, JUNE 10 at 10am at the Congregational Church, High Street, North Berwick followed by interment in the Evergreen Cemetery in Berwick, ME.  Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick, ME.  In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Maine Animal Welfare Society https://animalwelfaresociety.org/Another Chance Animal Rescue.  Condolences may be expressed at  www.JohnsonFuneralHomeME.com
