Frederick E. England

Frederick E. England, 81, of Alfred, ME, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2025. A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Fred was known for his quick wit, signature "Fred jokes," love of cribbage, music—especially Buddy Holly—and his kindness to both loved ones and strangers.

Born at home in South Berwick to Hattie & John England, Fred was the youngest of five children. He attended school in South Berwick until the age of 15 when he went to work in the shoe shop. At age 18 he joined the United States Army, earned his GED, and was stationed in Hawaii and Thailand, proudly serving his country for three years.  Upon his discharge, he spent several years in Illinois before returning home to South Berwick. In 1979 he married Cheryl, the love of his life.  Before moving to Weld, Maine in 1988 he worked for General Linen, Winebaum News and Robbins Auto.  

Fred had a gift for bringing people together. For 26 years, Fred and Cheryl owned and operated a beloved bakery and bed & breakfast in Weld, Maine, where they created a warm, welcoming space filled with good food, great stories, and lasting friendships. A natural host and storyteller, Fred made every gathering feel like home. 

Fred was an active member of the Weld community.  He served as Commander in the American Legion for a number of years in addition to starting a Cub Scout troop and serving as a Deacon at the Weld Congregational Church. He spent many happy hours in friendly competition with his buddies in the “Wicked Pissah Cribbage Group.”

After retiring, Fred and  Cheryl, settled in a close-knit community in Alfred, ME, where they embraced a slower pace of life. There, they built new friendships, shared countless laughs, and continued to create the sense of warmth and belonging that Fred was known for.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Cheryl; his son, Travis and his wife Yelena; his stepchildren, Amy, Eric, Darcie and Cheryl; his grandson, Yuli; and a large, loving extended family.

A celebration of his life will be held on February 14, 2025, at 1 p.m. at the Federated Church in South Berwick, ME. In lieu of flowers, please bring and share your favorite Fred memory. Please join us following the service in the vestry for light refreshments and fellowship.  

In honor of Fred and Valentines Day the family has encouraged attendees to “Wear red for Fred.”
