Eugene Hayes Obituary

Eugene (Gene) Hayes, 81 of North Berwick, ME passed away suddenly on January 23, 2024. He was the son of the late Albert Hayes and Doris (Rondeau).

Gene was raised and educated in Newmarket, NH. He graduated from Newmarket High School where he excelled at basketball and enjoyed the camaraderie of playing with his “Mules” teammates. During his high school years, he developed a passion for building and designing which led him to become a self-taught Master Carpenter. His many designs and projects are admired, appreciated, and have lasted the test of time; a testament to his craft.

Gene was a sports enthusiast, who enjoyed watching his local New England teams, especially the Patriots and Red Sox. He also was a NASCR enthusiast who attended many NASCAR races in Daytona and Loudon, NH. When Fall arrived, for Gene, it meant heading to “camp” in Brownsville, ME where the anticipated hunting season was about to begin. Along with his buddies, Dana, Jamie, Kenny, and his brother-in- law Joe, his days were filled scouting the woods, cooking meals together after a long day in those woods, sharing stories in the evening, and of course the thrill of the hunt ever present throughout their trips.

Gene shared his love of music with his son Glen. They went to many concerts in NH, Maine, and Massachusetts together; cherished memories.

Gene’s family was his top priority. He was always there for them; enthusiastically lending his helping hand. All who knew him, knew all one needed to do was ask, and he would be right there with his valued advice and skill to assist in any project.

Gene is survived by his loving wife of more than 50 years, Diana Sylvester Hayes, his brother Ronnie, his son Glen and his wife Christine, his daughter Sandy and her husband Peter, his stepson, Jeff and his fiancé Jeanne, grandchildren, Philip, Jarrett, Savannah, Thomas and Ryn and great grandchildren, Lincoln, Colt and Shay. He also leaves behind several sisters and brothers-in-law.

A mass will be celebrated in the spring, at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in South Berwick, ME.
