Edward Coulton Obituary

Edward Lee Coulton, 86, of Wells, passed away peacefully with family by his side on March 22,2022.

Born in Concord Massachusetts on October 11,1935 to Gertrude (Pride)  and William E. R. Coulton.

He married Rita Rose Darling on October 11, 1956 and were together 64 happy years.

“Lee” went by many names, one of which was “Good Wrench” because he loved the challenge of repairing things. He was a “MacGyver” of sorts, and attended Wells High School and Trade School in Florida. He and Rita owned the Gulf Station in Ogunquit Maine for many years which helped keep all his children, Cheri, Randy and Julie cruising on bicycles, go carts, snowmobiles, motorcycles and cars. In Ogunquit he made many life long friends, always offering advice or a tool to solve a problem all while enjoying a cup of  “Randy's Red Eye” coffee at Village Food Market with many of them.

“Grampy” taught his grandchildren  Aaron, Erica, Brandon and Brooke well. Over the years at the family's camp at Bunganut Lake, they learned many of his tricks of the trade. He taught them how to swim and water ski and he could hold his breath and swim longer under water then all of them which he was proud of...

His greatest love was riding his snowmobile with  Rita and family, many miles through  Maine and Canada, many times leaving from Wells for days and weeks. He loved the outdoors and could navigate most of Maine by memory.

Among his many accomplishments, one of his favorites was driving to California in 5 days to convince Rita to come back to Maine. He had only $300 in his pocket when he left. He blew an engine on the way, he had to buy and install a new engine, borrow a garage to change it out in and made it to California with $7 to spare... How could she say no???

He was an avid NASCAR fan and carpenter, making furniture for family and restoring old boats.

Lee also helped to build the first Archery Range here in Wells, and was a founding member of the Trailblazers Club. He was a member of the Marine Reserves and a Mason for the Ocean Masonic Lodge for over 50 years.

He is survived by his wife Rita Rose Darling, Cheri Goodspeed(Greenville), Randal Coulton and John Caveretta (Wells), Julie and Archie Stevens (Wells) Grandchildren, Aaron Stevens (York), Erica Rose Dionne (Portland), Brandon and Margo Stevens (S.Berwick) and Brooke Ann Stevens (Wells).

Two Awesome Great Grandchildren, T and Lu Stevens of York...

And many nieces, nephews and special friends that he cherished...He was a  man of few words but his actions spoke larger than words.

He was predeceased by his Mother, Father and sister Ginny Tinney.

Many thanks to the nurses and staff at the Kennebunk Nursing and Rehab Center for their care and kindness for Lee.
