Dr. Donald J. Tucker, 89, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2025 in Wentworth Douglas Hospital in Dover, NH.
Donald was born May 26, 1935 in Washington D.C. His parents later moved to Scotia N.Y where he completed school and attended Cornell University from 1953 to 1957 then returned to D.C and received his MD degree from Goerge Washington University Medical School. Donald completed his residency in Schenectady N.Y and became a board-certified Pathologist. He spent three years in Europe serving as a pathologist in the U.S Army Medical Corp.
Settling with his wife, Lois and 4 children in Lancaster N.H, he continued his career as a pathologist. His job brought him to H.D. Goodall Hospital in Sanford Maine in 1972, where he worked until retirement in 1987. The family settled in North Berwick where they purchased a colonial home, built in 1883. He and Lois were antiques dealers and historians and spent many, many years restoring the house top to bottom. Donald was a great wood worker as well and taking on many projects himself. Even in his later years, he and Lois were instrumental in documenting graves for the website “Find a Grave”; struggling through fields and woods of York County, covering most of North Berwick, Berwick, Wells and other towns. They also did their family heritage going back over 9 generations to early 1600's.
Don enjoyed many hobbies from woodworking to gardening and was an avid birder, providing counts for the state of Maine. He also collected N.Y. Spring bottles and wrote a Collectors Guild about antique bottles. Don loved animals and had a dairy cow which he milked and made fresh butter and cheese. Most will remember him for walking one of their 3 big, white Great Pyrenees around town to the Post Office.
Don is survived by his daughter Donna Tucker Smith and his son Jeffery Neal Tucker living in PA: 2 step children Phillip Becktoft and Michelle Grimmick; 4 beautiful granddaughters, Brittany J Smith and Jessie M. Smith; Rachel Tucker and Sunny Spinelli; 2 step grandkids Jere Grimmick and Manny Grimmick, and 4 great grands kids.
At his request, there will be no public services. He and Lois will be laid to rest in the spring in the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery in Springvale. Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick. Condolences may be shared at www.JohnsonFuneralHomeME.com
