Daniel Wellington Burbank VMD

Daniel Wellington Burbank, VMD, 82, of North Berwick, Maine passed away on August 23, 2024 at home, surrounded by loved ones. He was born on October 31,1941 in Rochester, NH to Thomas Handy and Euphemia (Johnston) Burbank.

Dan attended the Emerson School for Boys, York High School, and Liberty High School in Bethlehem, PA where he graduated at the age of 15.  He attended the University of New Hampshire, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1970.

Dan proudly served in the Navy from November of 1958 to May of 1962. He attended electronics school and received the Good Conduct Medal.

He married Ann (Tani) Burbank in 1964 and they had two children, Erik Tani Burbank and Kirstin Johnston Burbank-Corman.  

Dan was married to Barbara Stock Burbank from 1981 until 1997 and was Dad to her daughter Kimberly.

On New Year's Eve of 1997, he married the love of his life, Loretta (Hayden) Nash. Dan and Lore shared a blended family, whom they loved as their own: 

Children: Erik T. Burbank and wife Terri; Kirstin J. Burbank-Corman and husband Jeffrey; Kathleen A. Nash and partner Dathen Jones; Kristen E. Wiens and husband Joshua; Joshua E. Dionne and partner Brittany MacDonald; Beth (Kendall) Canavan and husband James.

Grandchildren: Sulo J. Burbank and wife Allison; Elle (Burbank) O'Brien and wife Lauren; Chase B. Corman; Abe T. Corman; Tre A. Corman; Ryder Dionne; Carter Dionne; Jillian Canavan; Timothy Canavan and wife Angela, Sophie (Canavan) Harlow and husband Aaron.

Great Grandchildren: Axell Burbank; Charlie Burbank; Emma (Canavan) Dawson; Riley Harlow

His family also includes many nieces and nephews: Sabrina (Grieg) Warner and partner Mark Robie;  Edward Grieg and wife Lucinda; Thomas Grieg and partner Judy Lynch; Abbie (Grieg) Philbrook and partner Chris Follansbee; Archer Israel and husband Harold; Susannah Israel; Elizabeth (Burbank) Conaton and husband Thomas; Cynthia (Burbank) Billings and husband Gregory; Susan (Porter) Downey and husband John; Douglas Porter and wife Dawn; and Stephen Porter and wife Cheryl.

Additionally Dan had many great and great great nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved very much. 

Predeceased by his siblings Rachel (Burbank) Grieg and her husband Edward; Thomas Handy Burbank;  Eleanor "Bonnie" Burbank; and his niece Laurel Burbank.

Dan started his Veterinary career in North Hampton, MA. He and Ann later moved with Erik and Kirstin to Kingston, NH where he opened the Kingston Veterinary Hospital. He was very fondly known as Dr. Dan. Early in his practice Dan diagnosed the first case of Equine Encephalitis in New Hampshire. Many horses were saved due to his diagnosis.

When possible, he liked to barter with his clients, which included driving lessons to receive his CDL license and making a couple of cross country runs. Dan was a true entrepreneur at heart. During and after his veterinary career he built houses, had a successful Amway business, worked as a Life Coach, owned a Sign Shop, trained Capuchin monkeys to assist people with health impairments, started an answering service, as well as pursuing many other passions and endeavors.

In his Kingston days he helped develop the Pop Warner football program, enjoyed playing tennis, racquetball, and bicycling, was actively involved in rasing funds to build a church in Exeter, loved attending youth sporting events, and playing poker with the guys.

He served on the Planning Board and was active in the Lion's Club, among other activities in the town.

After moving to Maine, he served for many years as a Trustee for the North Berwick Sanitary District and the North Berwick Rescue.

Dan and Lore loved to travel and go camping. He loved listening to music, playing the mandolin, skiing, cooking on the grill, playing games, attending family sports events, and being with friends and family. Dan was an imaginative storyteller. He enjoyed flying and owned a plane while in Kingston. He was the first of what would become 4 generations of Burbank racers with his SCCA race car. Dan was generous, kind, and always up for an adventure or creative business endeavor. Dan knew the power of positivity and lived it.  Everyone who was blessed to cross paths with him left his company feeling a little lighter, with their day a little brighter. He made sure of it. Dan was also a lifelong gifted healer.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2024 at 11:30 AM at the First Congregational Church, 15 High Street, North Berwick, ME with a reception to follow from 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM at the Lady Mary Inn Hurd Manor, 2 Elm Street, North Berwick, ME.
