Craig Warren Curtis

Craig W. Curtis-Born April 3, 1959 in Melrose, Mass. to Ella “Scott” Curtis and W. Warren Curtis. Craig was the youngest of six children. He moved to North Berwick in 1971 which became his beloved community. Craig passed away on December 19, 2024 peacefully at Watson’s Field Assisted Living in Dover NH. Craig attended Noble High School and graduated from Sanford Vocational High School in 1979. Craig worked at Hussey Manufacturing and went on to work for many years at Hannaford in Wells.

Craig was a devoted member of the North Berwick Fire Department for over 30 years. It is said that he had the highest number of responses to calls. He always showed up calmly and ready to provide whatever was needed. He was proud of his service and was known for his shiny red trucks. His most recent F150 Ford always was polished like an apple and was adorned with lights and the Fire Department license plate. Craig loved helping others and was a kind and thoughtful son, brother, uncle, neighbor and friend. He enjoyed helping out with projects and lending a hand to others. He especially loved using his John Deere Tractor to help with mowing, snow blowing or whatever trouble he could get in with it. Craig so loved being in the woods of Tatnic. Craig took up making walking sticks and would carefully select branches of trees and make them into beautiful pieces of art. Craig sold his walking sticks at shops, craft fairs and would also make them to give to others who may be going through an illness or a loss of a loved one. Craig spent hours with each design wood burning and making each one unique or personalized. Craig loved the outdoors and enjoyed helping out at his sister and brother in laws farm, picking blueberries and walking on the beach.

Craig was an animal lover and gave special attention to his pet friends dogs, cats and cows and the pigs. He was an amazing mimic of animal sounds, and got a big kick out of the reactions from his barking, mooing and calls of the wild. Craig had a great sense of humor and loved teasing those who would get it. His personality really flourished once he moved into Watson’s Field. He would make faces, animal noises and loved teasing the nurses and staff. He got a great kick out of being called “Trouble” and a shirt was made for him by one of the staff. Craig took his fate with this brain cancer with strength and courage. He was diagnosed in 2002 of a rare brain tumor Oligodendroglioma. Early on he had many rounds of treatment as well as brain surgery. He fought with determination and strength to regain his abilities and had 14 good years. Two years ago the tumor began to grow once again with force. He was never afraid and took his fate with grace and courage. Craig’s spirit will live on in many of those who knew him and got a chance to accept who he was.

Predeceased by his Father W. Warren Curtis, his mother Ella Curtis and his brother Wesley Curtis. He is survived by his Brother Wayne Curtis and wife Jan of Alfred, his sister Nancy Curtis Dugmore and husband Warren of South Berwick, his sister Samantha Curtis of Hastings NY, and his sister Betsey Curtis Hasty and husband Tom of South Berwick. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and greats. A private service is planned with his immediate family with Interment to follow on his birthday in the spring with full fire department honor.
