Carl Raymond Hurd Jr.

June 25, 1943 – June 25, 2025

It is with sad hearts that we share the loss of Carl, as a result of a lengthy illness. He passed away on June 25th which was his 82nd birthday. Carl was born in Manhattan, Kansas where his parents were stationed while his father served in the army. He was the first born of Sophie Elizabeth Ramsey Hurd and Carl Raymond Hurd. They both instilled in their children the importance and rewards of hard work and a faith-filled life.

As a young boy, Carl was involved in the family farm and all the chores and work required to maintain and manage the land and the animals that they raised. He particularly enjoyed the herd of cows they owned and as a result he became very involved in 4-H and showing cows in all the regional fairs. When in high school, he was a member of the Future Farmers of America. The ribbons and awards he received for his Guernsey cows and his showmanship over the years were numerous and earned him a great deal of respect as well. He graduated from Sanford High School in 1962, where he also played basketball and baseball.

Carl was a member of the Army National Guard, serving for 6 years earning an Honorable Discharge in 1971.

He and his brothers, Mark & Frank carried on their grand father’s legacy in owning and operating Hurd Lumber Co. working together for 50+ years. They were well respected for treating customers fairly and being a local employer of many people over the years. Lots of fond memories were made when customers and friends would stop by the office to catch up on the news, or have a hot dog and a Coke.

Carl was fun-loving, hardworking, loved a bargain, was a good dancer, had a sweet tooth, loved his Coca Cola and loved and appreciated Jo, his family, and all his friends from Maine to Florida.

He found a soul mate and life partner in Jo Holt. They have shared many years and adventures together traveling and enjoying his retirement in their home on wheels. When his health began to fail Jo was his rock and made sure he received the best care possible. She was his angel.

Carl was predeceased by his parents and his daughter, Bethany.

He is survived by his partner, Jo Holt, his siblings: Mark Hurd and wife Susan, June Hurd Robertson and husband David, Frank Hurd and wife Deb, Mary Hurd Waterhouse Lamb and husband Lonnie, son Seth Hurd and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family extends their gratitude to the staff of Pinnacle Health & Rehab of North Berwick.
