Burpee W. Hilton Jr.

Burpee Hilton, 93 of South Berwick, ME passed away on June 19, 2024 at his home after a brief period of failing health.

Burpee was born in South Berwick, ME on March 8, 1931 to Bernice (Young) and Burpee Hilton, Sr.  He lost his mom at a young age and was raised in South Berwick by his Aunt Ruth (Hilton) Blaisdell.  He married lifelong partner Rita Hilton on December 5, 1953 and settled on their family farm in South Berwick, Maine.

Burpee attended school at the Dunnybrook School House and then later on attending Berwick Academy.  He left school to work in the woods with a team of Horses until he joined the US Army and served in the Korean War.  Upon being discharged from the Army he purchased his long term home at 27 Knights Pond Road and operated a Dairy Farm until 1974 when he switched to Beef Animals.  All while running the farm he worked for and with his longtime time friend Sam Mick both as a Lumberman and a Construction Worker.  Burpee often had a team of working horses trained to work in the woods or pull a wagon for hay rides. 

When not taking care of the farm animals and haying, Burpee and Rita spent much time at the local Agricultural Fairs.  He also enjoyed traveling with family and friends all over the United States including Alaska and when in his home State of Maine, fishing and spending time at their camp in Oakfield.

Burpee is the last of the 10 Hilton siblings but is survived by his childhood family member and lifelong friend Leon Gray.  He was predeceased by his wife Rita and eldest son Michael.  He will be lovingly remembered by his children and their spouses, his many loving grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Burpee will be forever remembered by extended family and numerous friends. 

A celebration of life will be held by the family at the Hilton Farm in South Berwick, ME Saturday, June 29, 2024 from 4 to 6 PM.
