Brian Bennett Obituary

SANFORD, ME

Brian D. Bennett, 80, of Sanford, passed away peacefully October 18, 2025, after a period of declining health.

He was born in Sanford, ME, September 2, 1945, the son of George and Nathalie (Preston) Bennett.  Brian serviced in the United States Army Reserves with 8 weeks of basic training at Fort Bragg and active duty for 6 months at Fort Belvoir performing map compilation.  He continued with the reserves for 19 years earning the rank of Sargeant 1st Class in the 341st Map topographic division and 329th Engineering group.  His favorite duty was airport survey pavement analysis for C130 Landing strip at Fort Knox.

Brian put himself through college doing road surveying for the State of Maine. He earned his master’s degree in environmental engineering from UMaine, Orono.   He worked for E.C. Jordan in Portland, ME then Metcalf and Eddy, Boston, MA; designing the world’s largest water treatment plant in San Paolo, Brazil; project engineering in Fort Devens, Ayer, MA.

Brian loved nature and especially his time exploring the woods and walking his beloved dog.  He enjoyed cutting and chopping wood, maintaining two family homes and caring for his elderly relatives.  Music of all genres soothed his soul.

He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Robert Bennett.  Surviving are his twin sister, Brenda Williams and husband Vincent of Sanford and Rockland; 2 nephews, Roderick Penney and wife Rachel of So. Thomaston, ME; Ryan Penney and wife Deborah of Brunswick, ME; great niece and nephew, Sarah and Bennett Penney.

Graveside services will be held at the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery in Springvale, ME in the spring.
