BarbaraJean (Downs) Courtois, 61 passed away at her home October 28, 2025 after a time of failing health.
She was born in York, ME, April 25, 1964, the daughter of Allen and Linda (Mayo) Downs. BarbaraJean was a 1982 graduate of Wells High School where she excelled at drawing, winning awards for her artwork.
For many years, she was a Medical Assistant at Graceful Recovery in Kennebunk before retiring. BarbaraJean had a true green thumb both with her vegetable gardens and especially her indoor plants, which would take over the house! She loved the ocean and a good striper fishing trip to the inlet in Portsmouth.
After her grandmother passed away, BarbaraJean took over her role as the wonderful cook in the family. Among her amazing dishes and desserts were Chowders, apple cake and coconut cream pies, which were savored at family gatherings. BarbaraJean was an original cat lady who not only adored the cats, but anything with a cat on it including jewelry, clothing, paintings, you name it.
BarbaraJean will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor and being a prankster. Her pranks will continue to bring great memories for years to come. Mostly, BarbaraJean will be remembered for her unconditional and deep love for her son, Benjamin.
She was pre-deceased by her father, Allen Downs. Surviving are her son Benjamin Courtois of Wells; mother, Linda (Mayo) Downs and partner Victor Savage of Medway, ME; brother Allen E. Downs, Jr and partner Faith Alexander of Wells; sister Alison McLean and husband Harrison of Kennebunkport as well as nieces and nephews.
There will be no public services.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick, ME. Condolences may be expressed at www.JohnsonFuneralHomeME.com
