Sumner Murray, Jr. Obituary

Sumner B. (Sonny) Murray Jr., 78 of Hammond Road, passed away peacefully May 12, 2019 at his home.

Born in Sanford, Maine June 16, 1940 to Sumner B. Murray Sr and Jeanette E. (Tuttle) Murray;  Sonny graduated Sanford High School 1959. Spent time with his father working at Murray’s Garage on Main Street, Sanford during high school.

Met the love of his life, Linda J. (Swanson) and married her in July 1962.  Became a father of 2 girls, a grandfather of 4, and a great-grandfather of 2.  Attended Church at Sanford Assembly of God (now Curtis Lake Church).

Hobbies included watching NASCAR, racing a car at Beech Ridge Speedway, woodworking, and his Hudson.  Spent his early years driving tractor trailer and worked City Concrete, Dover, NH. One night he told his mother she didn’t have to worry about his Saturday night racing.  She was so pleased she was praising Jesus. He then said, “I’m going to be a reserve police officer, ” to which she started to pray. At 49 he was one of the oldest at that time to graduate from the Police Academy.  He worked for North Berwick PD and York County Sheriff’s Department - as a Deputy, DARE Officer, and Transport. He concluded his working career with Libby-Scott Paving.

He liked going for a ride and the rule was “never go the same way twice.”  A game his daughters still play. A helpful and true Main-ah: A man stopped by and asked, “What happens when I get to the end of this road?  Dad replied, “Well, it all depends if you take a left or a right.” A sense of humor and faith in Christ has kept him solid as a friend and father.  His later years were blessed by his second wife Pat Hubbard, who saved his life more than once.

Survived by daughters: Sandra Simonds and Lisa Blanchard, grandchildren: Abigail Ronco, Garrett Ronco, Duncan Blanchard, and Lisette Simeus, great-grandchildren: Vincent Stuurman and Dante Ronco and brothers, Jack Murray, Michael Murray and Leon Murray.
