Mary was truly an old fashioned, dignified lady in every sense of the word. She was the matriarch of her family who devoted her life, not only to her family but to helping others; whether it be cooking meals, volunteering or visiting with the sick and elderly. She volunteered at the Waban Country Store and was a very active member of the 1st Baptist Church in North Berwick where she was the pianist for many years. Mary had a great love of music and also played piano at the Bauneg Beg Grange in North Berwick, where she was a member. She was also a member of the Madisses Club. Mary loved her books, puzzles and playing games and was an avid Red Sox fan.
Mary adored her family and cherished everyday visits from the 5 generations. She led a long and healthy life surrounded by her large loving and doting family.
Mary was the holder of the Boston Post Cane, held by the eldest citizen of North Berwick.
She was pre-deceased by her siblings, Paul, Ralph and Clyde (Buddy)Staples, Ruth Mathews and Olive Furbish; her husband John (Jack) Steves and her beloved daughter Carole (Steves) Desrocher. “Gamma” as she was lovingly called, will be sorely missed by her son, John Steves and wife Dowie; 8 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 14 great-great grandchildren with 2 more eagerly anticipated in the spring. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and cousins.
