George A. Merchant, Sr.

George A. Merchant, 84, of Rochester, NH passed away at his home on December 10, 2018 after a period of failing health.

He was born in Gloucester, MA, May 22, 1934, son of Russell and Elsie (Hatch) Merchant and attended North Berwick Schools.  George was raised on the family farm in Tatnic before joining the  United States Army, serving as a border patrolman overseas.

George worked numerous jobs over the years; among them were a woodsman working in the sawmill, several shoe factories, including Dutchess Shoe, Roberts Shoe and Somersworth Shoe then retired from Tri-State Seafood in Somersworth, NH.

George loved riding his motorcycle and spending time with his family.

He was pre-deceased by brothers, Frank, David and Ralph Merchant and John Hunt.  Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Susan  (Hapgood) Merchant of Rochester, NH; 4 sons, George D. Merchant of Shapleigh, ME, George Merchant, Jr. of Florida, Leo Merchant of Rochester, NH, Raymond Merchant of Rollinsford, NH; 3 daughters, Blanche Jacques of Ossipee, NH, Louise Hapgood of Cornish, ME, Priscilla Melanson of Lebanon, ME, 3 step-children, Scott and Mark Frazier of Rochester, NH and Shawna Frazier of Madbury, NH; brother Clem Merchant of Middleton, NH, 2 sisters Leona Arnold of York and Diane Moshe of Newfield, ME as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A time of visitation will be held Saturday, December 15 from 11AM to 1PM immediately followed by a funeral service at 1PM at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick, ME  A funeral care fund has been set up to assist the family.  Donations may be sent to the Johnson Funeral Home, P.O.
